Slocum Foundation receives recognition from the Lane County Medical Society
For the October issue of their ‘Medical Matters’ magazine, the Lane County Medical Society reached out to the Foundation with a request to highlight our work, recent developments, and efforts to improve patient outcomes and enhance care in the community. It is an honor for the Slocum Foundation and Slocum Orthopedics to be recognized by the broader medical community for our work and engagement in these areas. We were very pleased to contribute and happy to be able to share this article with you below. Thank you to all who support the Slocum Foundation’s ongoing mission, we wouldn’t be here without each of your contributions, and especially to Slocum Orthopedics for their many years of unwavering commitment.

Slocum research goes to the podium
at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association’s
2026 annual meeting
Kate Spitzley recently returned from the Orthopaedic Trauma Association’s 2026 Annual meeting in Nashville, TN, where she delivered a podium presentation outlining the usability of iPhone metrics for tracking gait recovery in a trauma population.
This study, funded by the OTA, and executed in a collaboration between the UO’s Bowerman Sports Science Center and the Slocum Foundation, explores the technical aspects of using an iPhone to provide useful clinical data for both patient care and clinical research.
Did you know that Dr. Wilkinson is leading Slocum and the Slocum Foundation’s participation in a Clinical Trial funded by the US Department of Defense?
In a study led by the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the Slocum Foundation is one of 33 centers across the US who are partnered to investigate the outcomes of two wound management options following severe open tibia fracture. The ultimate goal being to prevent amputation and mortality by providing the most effective wound management.
Our group recently received a shout out from the study for pushing study enrollment to it’s half way mark. Thank you to Drs. Wilkinson, van der Horst, Fitzpatrick, and Sheerin for their efforts on this trial and to Hannah College for coordinating the study in-house!
The full study protocol is freely available here:
Randomised controlled trial comparing antibiotic cement bead pouch versus negative pressure wound therapy for the management of severe open tibia fracture wounds: Beads versus VAC (BvV) protocol.
