Program Description
This fund supports the open access publication of peer-reviewed research by providing financial assistance with article processing charges (APCs) for manuscripts affiliated with the Slocum Foundation or Slocum Orthopedics. The program is designed to remove cost barriers to open access publishing, with a particular emphasis on research led by or involving trainee authors, including undergraduate students, post-graduate researchers, and other early-career trainees.
Funding is awarded on a competitive basis and prioritizes manuscripts where trainees played a meaningful role in the research and writing process, where open access publication would advance the field, and where alternative funding sources — such as institutional publishing agreements or publisher fee waivers — are unavailable or insufficient.
Only manuscripts that have been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal are eligible for funding. Applications are reviewed by a panel with relevant subject matter expertise, who evaluate each submission on the basis of trainee involvement, scholarly merit, and demonstrated financial need.
The maximum funding that will be awarded to support each publication is $1,000. Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted and awards granted until the fund runs out each year.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be reviewed using the following criteria:
Involvement of trainee authors. This fund will prioritize publications involving and featuring trainee authors.
Merit of the manuscript and publication to the relevant field as determined by the review panel. Reviewers will be selected based on their knowledge of the subject matter and publication landscape.
Financial need. Publications that do not have alternative funding mechanisms (e.g. university publishing agreements or publisher fee waivers) will be prioritized for funding.
